First Settled in 1671, the community is especially proud of its history. The historical district is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. A number of charming 18th and 19th Century houses are clustered in the heart of hamlet. New buildings have been carefully planned to blend in harmoniously with the quaintness of the area and the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The School District is considered excellent; its high school, in 1984, was one of the first on Long Island to receive a national award for excellence in education. Total student population is about 2,800, served in 2 elementary schools, a middle school (657 students) and the high school (825 students).

Sound Beach: Directly east of us, Sound Beach is one of the few places on Long Island with many homes selling for under $300,000. The Community dates only from the 1920's, when the NY Daily Mirror sold tiny parcels to readers at bargain prices as a promotional ploy. The terrain is treed and rolling, just as its neighbors, but the homesites are much smaller due to the hamlet's unique origin.

Population is dense, about 9,500 permanent residents in 27 square miles. Based on residence location, Sound Beach children attend either the Miller Place or Rocky Point school districts since the boundary line splits the hamlet.

Rocky Point: Just to the east of Sound Beach is Rocky Point, also noted for the same gently rolling, treed hills and scenic water vistas, but with larger building plots and homes.

Rocky Point is noted in communications history as the location of "RCA Radio Central", the world's largest and most powerful wireless transmitting station in the 1920's and 1930's. It transmitted the first transatlantic wireless message in 1921. Radio Central consisted of 12 steel antenna towers over 400' high, with 150' cross arms, spread over 6,400 acres in a 10 square mile area. Concrete foundations were sunk 9 feet below the ground. After the facility became obsolete, the towers were demolished, but their remains can be seen in the present day nature preserve. Another aspect of communications history, the Marconi Wireless Building, is located in front of a Rocky Point elementary school. Originally operated in Babylon in 1902, it was moved to Rocky Point and presented to Radio Central.

The Rocky Point School District serves all of the area and about half of Sound Beach in a K-3 school, a 4-6 grade school, a middle school and a high school. Total student population is about 3,100, with about 1,200 in the high school.
